What is Tinnitus Retraining Therapy?

If you have tinnitus, you have likely searched for ways to lessen your symptoms.  After all, the ringing in your ears can be hard to deal with, so you want a way to control the phantom noises.  Because of that, many people have turned to Tinnitus Retraining Therapy.

Changing Your Perception

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy, or TRT, is used to trick your mind.  It was realized that perception is very important when it comes to tinnitus.  It is not the tinnitus as much as your perception of the tinnitus that is bothersome.  Thus, by changing the perception, the effects of the tinnitus can be changed as well.

Whenever people experience tinnitus, they have an emotional response.  The response dictates how they feel about the tinnitus.

Because of the emotional response, people recoil at the sounds of tinnitus, which in turn makes the phantom noises even worse. That is where Tinnitus Retraining Therapy comes into play.

Step One:  Audiology Exam

The first step of Tinnitus Retraining Therapy is an audiology exam.  During this exam, the doctor actually makes the tinnitus appear.  They know the importance of finding out how you react to the tinnitus, and thus, they have to make the tinnitus appear so they can gauge the reaction.

The audiology tests will come in many different forms.  In some of the tests, the patient will be tricked to see if the tinnitus comes out when it technically should not.  The way the doctor will do this is he will expose the ear that is not afflicted with tinnitus to noise.  In most cases, the person will have symptoms of tinnitus, even though it is his “healthy” ear that is being exposed to the noise.

This tells the doctor something very important.  It tells the doctor that the patient has a very strong emotional connection to the tinnitus.  Because of that emotional connection, if he thinks his symptoms will appear, he reacts to them.

Step Two:  Device Fitting

After the audiology testes are conducted, the patient is then fitted with a device.  This device fits into the ear and emits a low level broadband sound.  This sound is meant to bring the tinnitus out so the patent can learn how to deal with it.

Step Three:  Retraining Therapy

Of course, the patient could not possibly deal with it on his own, which is where the counselor comes into play.  The counselor works with the patient to change the way he perceives the phantom noises that come from the tinnitus.  By changing his perceptions, he is then able to ignore the sounds of tinnitus.

This is typically a two year process.  Patients have to learn how to change the way they process sounds, so it is a very comprehensive therapy.  However, it is highly successful for those that stick it out.

It is important to realize this is not a cure.  Tinnitus Retraining Therapy is meant to change the way people deal with tinnitus, but it is not meant to be a cure.  Because of that, people need to realize the sounds will still be there.  What will be different is the perceptions people have to those sounds.

After people successfully make it through Tinnitus Retraining Therapy, tinnitus sounds can become background noise, much like the humming of the air conditioner.  They are still there, but people don’t pay attention to them as they once did.

People that choose Tinnitus Retraining Therapy need to prepare for the work it will take to make it through the process.  Once they are through with the process, though, they will be able to deal with tinnitus in a way that they never thought was possible.
